Bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and changes in bowel habits are commonly associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/strong>. But these symptoms can also occur in people with endometriosis<\/strong>.<\/p>

This overlap can make it difficult to determine where gastrointestinal symptoms are coming from. Some people with endometriosis may initially be diagnosed with IBS, while others may actually have both conditions.<\/p>

One important clue is how bowel symptoms relate to the menstrual cycle. When gastrointestinal symptoms consistently become worse before or during a period, endometriosis may be worth investigating.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

IBS is a disorder involving the interaction between the gut and the brain. It can cause abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements without the structural abnormalities seen with diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease.<\/p>

Endometriosis is different. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, potentially causing inflammation, fibrosis, adhesions, and pain.<\/p>

Can You Have IBS and Endometriosis at the Same Time?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Yes.<\/p>

IBS should not simply be considered another name for endometriosis. The two are separate conditions, and a person can have either one or both.<\/p>

Research suggests that IBS is considerably more common among people with endometriosis.<\/p>

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 11 studies involving more than 96,000 participants<\/strong>. The researchers found that people with endometriosis had approximately three times the odds of having IBS<\/strong> compared with controls. In six studies examining IBS prevalence, approximately 23% of women with endometriosis also had IBS <\/strong>(Nabi et al., 2022).<\/p>

Researchers are still investigating why the conditions occur together so frequently. The association does not necessarily mean that endometriosis causes IBS.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
