It generally means that the ovary has become fixed or adherent to surrounding tissue rather than moving normally.<\/p><p>Research using transvaginal ultrasound has defined a fixed ovary as one adherent laterally to the pelvic sidewall or medially to the uterus. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>An ovary may become adherent to the:<\/p><ul><li>Pelvic sidewall<\/li><li>Uterus<\/li><li>Fallopian tube<\/li><li>Bowel<\/li><li>Other surrounding pelvic tissues<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b9b067 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2b9b067\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can Endometriosis Cause an Ovary to Stick to the Pelvic Wall?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b05102b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b05102b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Yes. Endometriosis can contribute to adhesions that cause an ovary to become fixed to the pelvic sidewall.<\/strong><\/p><p>Endometriosis is associated with inflammation, fibrosis, and adhesion formation. These changes can cause normally separate pelvic tissues to become attached, restricting the ovary&#8217;s normal mobility.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/nygse.com\/ovary-stuck-to-uterus-endometriosis\/\">Ovarian fixation<\/a> has also been associated with other findings of endometriosis, including <a href=\"https:\/\/nygse.com\/departments\/ovarian-endometrioma\/\">ovarian endometriomas<\/a>, deep endometriosis, and more extensive pelvic disease. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>However, a fixed ovary is <strong>not specific to endometriosis<\/strong>. ESHRE recommends considering endometriosis in patients with symptoms such as dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, dyschezia, urinary symptoms, fatigue, and infertility. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-524637e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"524637e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Ultrasound Can Assess Ovarian Mobility<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c443eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c443eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>During a specialized transvaginal ultrasound, the clinician can assess whether the ovary <strong>moves freely or remains fixed against surrounding structures.<\/strong><\/p><p>A 2014 study comparing ultrasound with laparoscopic findings found that fixed ovaries on transvaginal ultrasound had <strong>78.4% sensitivity and 94.2% specificity for detecting endometriosis<\/strong> in its study population. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>More recent radiology guidance also recognizes immobility of an ovary relative to the pelvic sidewall, uterus, bowel, or opposite ovary as a useful indirect observation of endometriosis. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d37e14e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d37e14e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Fixed Ovary May Be a Clue to More Extensive Disease<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-83b0878 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"83b0878\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Ovarian fixation can sometimes provide information about the extent of disease.<\/p><p>In a study of 66 women with pelvic pain who underwent ultrasound followed by endometriosis surgery, ovarian fixation was significantly associated with <strong>ovarian endometrioma, pouch of Douglas obliteration, deep endometriosis, and moderate-to-severe endometriosis<\/strong>. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>The finding was also associated with an increased likelihood of requiring pelvic sidewall dissection during surgery. However, ovarian fixation alone does not determine the severity of endometriosis in an individual patient.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b10ac51 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b10ac51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Can an Ovary Stuck to the Pelvic Wall Affect Fertility?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9fa4ba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9fa4ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Potentially, but a fixed ovary does <strong>not automatically mean infertility.<\/strong><\/p><p>Adhesions can alter the normal relationship between the ovary and fallopian tube. If this anatomy is significantly distorted, the fallopian tube&#8217;s ability to capture the released egg may potentially be affected.<\/p><p>Fertility depends on many other factors, so ovarian fixation alone cannot determine whether someone can become pregnant naturally.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed4d3a2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ed4d3a2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What an Ovary Stuck to the Pelvic Wall May Mean<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e68833 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9e68833\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An <strong>ovary stuck to the pelvic wall<\/strong> may be a sign of adhesions and, in some patients, may be associated with endometriosis.
