It may appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly.<\/p><p>There are several possible causes of rectal pain. In some patients, deep endometriosis can directly involve the bowel.<\/p><p>Inflammation, fibrosis, adhesions, and deep endometriotic lesions in this region may contribute to pain and painful bowel movements. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>However, rectal pain does <strong>not automatically mean that endometriosis is affecting the bowel.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b9b067 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2b9b067\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Endometriosis-Related Rectal Pain Can Feel Like<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b05102b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b05102b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Symptoms vary from person to person and may include:<\/p><ul><li>Sharp or stabbing rectal pain<\/li><li>Pain during bowel movements<\/li><li>Deep pressure or aching in the rectal area<\/li><li>Pain that becomes worse during menstruation<\/li><li>Pelvic pain occurring with rectal pain<\/li><li>Constipation or diarrhea around menstruation<\/li><li>Less commonly, painful rectal bleeding<\/li><\/ul><p>Some patients informally use the term <strong>\u201cbutt lightning\u201d<\/strong> to describe sudden, intense, electric or stabbing pain in the rectal area. Butt lightning is not a medical diagnosis, and this type of pain can have several possible causes.<\/p><p>Dyschezia and painful rectal bleeding are among the symptoms clinicians are advised to consider when evaluating possible endometriosis. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0950e61 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0950e61\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Rectal Pain May Worsen During Your Period<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7145404 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7145404\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nygse.com\/endometriosis-symptom-checker\/\">Endometriosis-associated symptoms<\/a> can follow a <strong>cyclical pattern<\/strong>, becoming more noticeable before or during menstruation.<\/p><p>National Institute for Health and Care Excellence specifically identifies period-related or cyclical gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly painful bowel movements, as symptoms that should raise consideration of endometriosis. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>The timing of symptoms can therefore provide an important clinical clue. Rectal pain that repeatedly appears or becomes worse during the same part of the menstrual cycle may deserve further evaluation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b94c45e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b94c45e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Rectal Pain and Bowel Endometriosis<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eff36f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eff36f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nygse.com\/departments\/bowel-endometriosis\/\">Bowel endometriosis<\/a> is a form of deep endometriosis in which endometriotic disease affects the bowel. The rectum and sigmoid colon are commonly affected locations. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><p>Symptoms can include painful bowel movements, pelvic pain, changes in bowel habits, and other symptoms that become more noticeable around menstruation. However, symptoms alone cannot determine whether endometriosis has affected the bowel.<\/p><p>Rectal pain can also occur without bowel endometriosis. Disease elsewhere in the posterior pelvis and other gastrointestinal, anorectal, pelvic floor, gynecologic, musculoskeletal, or neurological conditions may produce similar symptoms.<\/p><p>When endometriosis is suspected, <strong>ultrasound or MRI<\/strong> may be used as part of the diagnostic evaluation, particularly when deep endometriosis is suspected. Importantly, normal imaging does not completely rule out endometriosis, especially superficial peritoneal disease. <a href=\"#references\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-524637e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"524637e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">When Rectal Pain Should Be Evaluated<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c443eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9c443eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An occasional brief episode of rectal pain does not necessarily indicate endometriosis. But <strong>recurrent rectal pain that consistently becomes worse before or during menstruation<\/strong>, particularly when accompanied by painful periods, pelvic pain, painful bowel movements, or pain during sex, may warrant further evaluation.<\/p><p>New or unexplained rectal bleeding, severe or persistent pain, fever, or significant changes in bowel habits should also be medically evaluated
